
MITCHELL, WILLIAM RAY, LCDR, US NAVY, passed away on Thursday, June 3, 2010.
He was born July 14, 1936 in McLean County, IL, the son of the late Raymond Mitchell and Sarah Lee Mitchell. LCDR Mitchell was currently the president of the USS Power (DD-839) Association. Other ships that Mitchell served aboard are the USS Rasher (submarine), USS Goodrich and USS the William V. Pratt. Mitchell served aboard Long Beach as operations manager for Group Commander, Pacific, and also served as aide de camp to the Commander All Naval Forces Vietnam. Mitchell's shore command was the Naval Ocean Systems Center, Point Loma, CA.
After retiring from the Navy, Mitchell was employed with Lockheed-Martin as manager of Software Development and held that title until his retirement.
LCDR Mitchell was a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Military Officers of America, Military Officers of the World Wars, a graduate of the University of Colorado and a graduate of the master's degree program in electrical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA. Bill Mitchell's favorite hobbies were woodworking and word working of crossword puzzles.
His parents; and his sister, Mary Emily Mitchell-Ashenbremer, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary Ann Carrico-Mitchell RN BS; and his three children, Michael (Carrie) Mitchell of Scottsdale, AZ, Anne Marie Mitchell-Howard (Gary) of Sedalia, CO and Kate Mitchell-Hettinger (Trey) of Louisville. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kelly and Kyle Mitchell, Mitchell and Savannah Howard, Sarah Lorraine, Joseph and John Samuel Hettinger and a brother Franklyn (Dottie) Mitchell of Bloomington, IL.
LCDR Mitchell will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a later date. Ratterman's, 3711 Lexington Road was entrusted with arrangements.
